Hmm... the data center sure is full of gifts, eh? We might sound like a broken record when we talk about being prepared and taking care of issues before they become a big problem. But we are firm believers that a little preparation goes a long way. That's never more true than around the holiday season. Restricted hours, staff vacations, limited vendor hours, and more can make taking care of issues during the holiday season more difficult (and if you don't have a contract in place — more expensive).

If you want to avoid singing the data center version of the 12 days of Christmas, you might want to take some steps to prep your data center for the holiday season. Our M Global engineers have a few tips to help you get your data center ready for the holidays (and keep you singing the regular version of 12 Days of Christmas, haha)

Do a physical inspection of your equipment

It doesn't take a ton of time or effort to check out your devices, but you'll be able to spot the usual suspects: unplugged ports, broken cables, or flashing LEDs.

Take care of outstanding service issues before your vacation

Don't leave issues lingering - they could turn into a bigger problem, causing major headaches. Extra points if you can get on your provider's schedule before their holiday rush as well.

Arrange staff resources

In an ideal world, every department would have plenty of staff coverage who are perfectly cross-trained to handle every situation. Haha! The reality often falls short of that! But whether you have someone covering your stuff or not, it's a good idea to leave things in good order and have a plan for who people will go to while you're on vacation (hopefully, it's not you!)

Don't try to do a critical update right before the holidays

While it's true that you'll want to take care of outstanding issues before leaving on vacation, it's generally a good idea to save nonessential work for after the holidays. You don't need to have an update take out the system on Christmas Eve if you can possibly help it!

Don't leave your computer logged in/unlocked

Many companies have security policies about logging out and locking down workstations while employees are out of the office. Take it a step further and make sure you haven't left your desk looking like a disaster zone or any heaters or mug warmers on/plugged in.
