A Note From Steve: A Perspective Shift on New Year's Resolutions

Steve shares his unique perspective on New Year's Resolutions.

New Year’s Resolutions — most people have strong opinions about them — they either love them or hate them. My relationship with New Year's resolutions is what you'd call complicated. For years, I made all kinds of resolutions, both big and small. And inevitably, days, weeks, or if I was very determined, months later, my motivation would flag, and my resolution would climb to the top of the pile of failures.

In recent years, my thinking has shifted. I am still a great fan of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. I find value in self-improvement in my personal and professional life, and I strive to be a better boss, friend, dad, and person. But what has changed is my perspective. No longer do I see it as an all-or-nothing venture. Life isn’t simply stacks of successes or failures — with New Year’s resolutions unavoidably adding to the wrong pile.

Instead, I see the New Year as a time to push the reset button. My motivation gets a kickstart, and I’m ready to hit the ground running again. New beginnings are wonderful things — full of hope and possibilities. Sure, this time next year, I probably won’t have achieved everything I would have liked to, but I will hopefully have made progress. I’ll be a little closer to my goals, and have a sense of accomplishment in the work I’ve done. And that’s what it’s about. No wallowing in a guilt-fest of failures, instead, I can celebrate how far I've come and what I've accomplished.

As I look back over the years, I am pleased with what we’ve achieved — M Global is a company I am proud of — we are determined to stay true to our values and provide service that we all can be proud of to our clients. We set goals to improve how we do things as part of our regular operations — not simply a once a year.

Goal Crushing Ahead!

If you’ve got some lofty goals in mind for this upcoming year, you’re not alone! My son, Kenji, has some very important goals on his list for 2023, too. I have no doubt he will work hard to achieve those goals (I better watch out for #1 on his list!) It’s good to remember, though, that this goal-setting and achieving is not an all-or-nothing venture. We all face setbacks, have obstacles to overcome, and experience days where our motivation falters, and we lose momentum. If you’re like me, you might have to negotiate with yourself to get back on track. But however slow my progress may be, I know I need to keep going, keep trying, and not give up — that’s what real achievement looks like.

At M Global, we might not be able to help you tackle all the goals on your list (you’re on your own for kicking that bad habit, improving your Pokemon game, or getting to the gym more often), but if anything on your list involves getting your IT hardware in order, we’ve got you covered.
