Cisco End of Sale and End of Life Policies

Cisco treats the term "End of Life" or EOL as a process with various milestones and dates with the end goal of a product becoming obsolete. Once a product completes the Cisco EOL process, it will no longer be "sold, improved, maintained or supported." Sometimes, the Cisco End of Sale and End of Life policies can be confusing. Here's an overview of a few key basics:

  • End of Sale dates are usually announced six months before the EOS date and reflect the last day the product will be available for purchase through Cisco.
  • Support service availability varies from 1 year after the EOS date (software maintenance, bug fixes, & routine failure analysis) to 5 years (TAC support for hardware and replacement parts).
  • Hardware service contracts through Cisco can be renewed after the EOS date but cannot extend past the Last Day of Support (LDOS).
  • Software updates and maintenance are only available for one year after the EOS date.

What to do when your Cisco Equipment goes EOS or EOL

When your Cisco devices near the end of the EOL process, you'll have a couple of options to keep support going for your equipment.

1.  Buy the newest version. If you have the room in your budget and need or want the features available in the latest version, this could be an option for you. But be aware—this is often the most expensive choice.

2.  Keep your Cisco devices and get third party hardware support. If your budget is tight or your equipment is still working great, there’s no need to stress—hardware support from a TPM provider is a great choice. It's not a shocker that we're a fan of this option.

3. Maintain the equipment yourself if you have the technical expertise and resources. Though cost-effective on the front end, this option requires the ability to troubleshoot failures, find replacement parts, and have the skill to fix the issue. Weighing the potential risks of downtime and whether your device is part of a critical environment can help you decide if this is the right option.

If you are comfortable using your current equipment after it goes EOS or EOL and want to improve performance or purchase additional EOL Cisco equipment, we can help! A 1-year warranty is provided at no additional cost. We're all about providing out-of-the-box solutions that help you make the most of your environment.
